Was born in Milwaukee in 1931, Metzker had been photographing since he was a teenager doing journalistic work in high school and college, where he also abstract sculpture . After a brief stint in the Army during the Korean War, he enrolled at the ID, as it later came to be 'a marriage that Callahan Callahan and Siskind in me. 'A selection of work from the 40s Callahan shows how its use of multiple exposures, perspectives and strong contrast was the basis for a large part of aesthetic Metzker.
